Obelisk
Obelisk- a stone pillar, typically having a square or rectangular cross section and a pyramidal top, set up as a monument or landmark
Problem: Create and obelisk with your team members. The height of the obelisk must be from 1.5ft to 2.5ft. The base of the obelisk must be from 2" by 3" - 5" by 6". We then had to create a language that is original and put it on all four sides of the obelisk. The project could be created from unlimited materials. Think of possibilities of how the Egyptians were able to lift the obelisk with such little technology that they had back then. Solution: We created a wooden obelisk. My teams obelisk was 18 inches high and had a base of 3" by 3". To lift the obelisk we first thought of using a series of strings and ropes tied around the obelisk to lift it but the base wasn't balanced enough to help it stand up. For the second try we used a sand hill. We put the obelisk at the top of the sand hill then used some ropes to slide the obelisk down the hill and land perfectly at the bottom Evidence Sources: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/423656/obelisk http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/lostempires/obelisk/cutting.html Feedback: This project was boring to be honest because there wasn't a lot of imagination going into the ideas and things. The project was easy and simple which means an easy A.Building obelisk wasn't difficult that much because I didn't build the actual obelisk, I came up with the language. Picking what materials to use was a little difficult because we wanted something that wouldn't be heavy, but sturdy enough. Raising the obelisk was hard because we had to come up with a mechanism that might have been used to lift obelisk during the time of Ancient Egyptians. |
My team and I have come up with the designs for the obelisk. It's going to be made out of two things. The interior of the obelisk will me made of wood, then the outside will be made out of a mixture of dirt and terracotta clay. The mixture will give the obelisk the look and feel of old Egyptian obelisks. The dimensions for the base will be 5" by 6" and the bottom will be 3.5" by 4". The height of the obelisk will be 2.5'.

Coming up with the language for the obelisk is hard. We have not decided on what we want it to say
